Website Redesign Checklist: 9 Signs Your Business Site Needs a Rebuild
Outdated design, not mobile-friendly, no clear contact path, slow pages, no SEO basics, broken links, no reviews on display, branding mismatch, high bounce rate.
Most business owners know when their website feels off, but it helps to have specific signs to look for. Here are nine clear indicators that it is time to rebuild, along with what to do about each one.
1. It Looks Outdated
Web design moves fast. A site that looked modern five years ago often feels dated today. Flat icons replaced with gradients, old serif fonts replaced with clean variable fonts, full-width hero sections replaced with cluttered layouts. If your site looks like it was built in a different era, it signals to visitors that your business might be stuck in that era too.
Fix: A fresh, modern design that reflects where your brand is now, not where it was five years ago.
2. It Is Not Mobile-Friendly
More than half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your site has tiny text, buttons that are hard to tap, or layouts that require pinching and zooming, you are losing visitors before they even read a word of your content. Google also uses mobile performance as a ranking signal, so a poor mobile experience directly affects your visibility in search results.
Fix: Rebuild mobile-first from scratch, not as an afterthought added to a desktop design.
3. There Is No Clear Way to Contact You Above the Fold
A visitor should be able to find your phone number or a contact button without scrolling. If someone has to hunt for your contact information, most will not. They will leave and find a competitor whose site made it easier.
Fix: Your phone number and a clear call-to-action button should be visible immediately when someone lands on any page of your site.
4. Pages Take More Than 3 Seconds to Load
Google has published research showing that the probability of a visitor bouncing increases sharply with every additional second of load time. A site that takes four or five seconds to load is quietly losing a significant portion of the traffic it worked to earn. And since page speed is a ranking factor, slow sites also rank lower.
Fix: Optimize images, use proper hosting, and build with clean code. A fast site is a design choice, not just a technical one.
5. There Is No Basic SEO
Every page on your site should have a unique, descriptive title tag, a meta description, and a clear heading structure. These are not optional extras. They are how Google understands what your page is about and how potential customers find you in search results. A site with missing or duplicate title tags, no meta descriptions, and an unclear heading structure is essentially invisible to search engines.
Fix: Implement proper on-page SEO structure across every page: unique title tags with relevant keywords, compelling meta descriptions, and clean heading hierarchies.
6. There Are Broken Links or Outdated Information
A broken link is a dead end. A page that lists services you no longer offer, hours that changed two years ago, or a phone number that is no longer active erodes trust immediately. Visitors notice. Search engines notice too.
Fix: Do a thorough audit of every page, link, and piece of information on the site. Update or remove anything that is no longer accurate.
7. There Are No Reviews or Testimonials Visible
For most small businesses, social proof is the most powerful conversion tool available. A prospect who lands on your site is asking themselves: has this person helped someone like me? If there is no answer to that question visible on the page, you are leaving persuasion on the table. Reviews, testimonials, and case summaries belong on your homepage and on every key service page.
Fix: Add a reviews section to every key page. Even a few well-placed testimonials from real customers make a meaningful difference.
8. Your Branding Looks Different on Your Site Than on Your Truck or Cards
If your website uses different colors, different fonts, or a different logo than your truck wrap, business cards, or uniform, it creates a disconnect. Customers who found you offline and then visit your site should have a consistent experience. Inconsistency signals either disorganization or that the site was built in a different era of your business.
Fix: Align your brand across every touchpoint. Your site should feel like the same business a customer already met in person.
9. Your Bounce Rate Is High and Inquiries Are Low
If your analytics show that visitors are landing on your site and leaving quickly without taking any action, that is a clear signal the site is not doing its job. High bounce rates combined with low inquiry volume usually mean the site is not communicating value clearly enough or is not making it easy enough for visitors to take the next step.
Fix: Redesign with the conversion path as the primary priority. Every page should have a clear purpose and a clear next step for the visitor.
How Many of These Apply to Your Site?
If you recognized three or more of these signs in your current site, a rebuild will likely pay for itself quickly in recovered leads and better first impressions. The goal of a redesign is not just to look better. It is to work better.
